Song of the Week: "Steel Spine" by LOCKED SHUT

I remember the first time someone introduced me to LOCKED SHUT. They were going on about how important it was that they made it out to one of their shows here in California last year, and in my head I was like, this guy is really hyped off this… I need to listen. He sent me a few songs and I instantly fell in love. The first one I added was “Steel Spine,” and just like that, LOCKED SHUT went from a complete stranger band to one of my most played to this day.

LOCKED SHUT is a rising midwest hardcore band known for their raw, no-frills intensity and tight, calculated sound. Built out of the underground scene, they’ve been steadily gaining traction through relentless live shows and a growing fanbase that feeds off their energy.

The track itself is short but mighty. It’s an intense, perfectly put together couple of minutes that make you feel like you’ve gained all your health bars back and then some. There’s a steady rhythm that speeds up and breaks down in a way that feels so structured but raw. The intro hits like any great hardcore song, that solid, punchy opening that immediately gets disrupted by unclean vocals. It’s gritty and unfiltered, a hypnotic sound that makes you instinctively sway and brace yourself for what’s coming next.

What really makes “Steel Spine” stand out is how balanced it feels. There’s nothing excessive. Just enough riff, just enough cymbals, just enough vocals. It feels like it follows the perfect formula for a great track without sounding formulaic. Somehow it feels fast as hell, but also more controlled than a lot of hardcore songs that fly by in a blink. It’s calculated without feeling overworked, and it never loses its grit in the process.

Lyrically, it’s simple with a message only a fool would miss. It’s about being tough, standing your ground, and not breaking for anyone. Lines like, “I'm getting stronger with every move that I make, step after step, I feel the ground quake, make me an offer so I can spit in your face, my loyalty ain't all that easy to break,” hit hard. It’s bold, a little aggressive, and honestly just badass. Maybe it was written from a specific place, but it’s something anyone can take with them. For me, someone who’s usually more quiet and passive, this song flips a switch. It makes me feel like I could tell anyone twice my size and personality to kick rocks without a second thought.

And live, that energy is on a completely different level. The real reason this ended up being my song of the week is because I genuinely need more people to experience LOCKED SHUT in person. The crowd is insane, the kind of energy you don’t just watch, you become part of it. Seeing the videos of their tour has me beaming with jealousy. It looks so insane. I love it because it’s not a bunch of people standing and keeping composure. It’s literally the opposite. It’s involvement, sweat, bodies flying; it’s a hands-on experience rather than just an observation. You’re not just watching the show, you’re a part of it, and that’s what makes the hxc community and its artists so close.

They came through California back in May 2025, and I was late to the game. I missed my chance to see it for myself, and now it’s been almost a year and I’m still sitting here waiting, impatiently, for them to come back.

They don’t make it out to the West Coast as often, which makes it even harder, because now I know exactly what I missed.

Right now, LOCKED SHUT are wrapping up their Spring 2026 tour this week, and it honestly feels like it’s ending just as fast as it started. They’ve been moving through a full run of cities, building momentum night after night, and now it’s down to those final shows before everything goes quiet again, but hopefully not for too long.

Now it’s just that waiting phase again, fingers crossed the next tour gets announced soon and brings them back out with a run that includes more West Coast dates, especially California, so there’s finally a chance to catch it this time.

“Steel Spine” is just one of many sick tracks this band has to offer. If you haven’t checked them out yet, this is your sign. And LOCKED SHUT, please, for the love of everything, come back to the West Coast. Sincerely, California.
