Dinosaur Jr. are back with new music and a packed fall tour. The legendary trio just announced There Near, their 13th studio album, dropping August 28th via Jagjaguwar. It's their first new full-length since 2021's Sweep It Into Space, and from the sound of the lead single, the wait was worth it.

The album was recorded over the course of a year at Bisquiteen Studio in Amherst, Massachusetts, with the core lineup of J Mascis, Murph, and Lou Barlow. This is their sixth studio record since reuniting in 2005, and Mascis went deep on chasing a specific sound this time around. He tracked much of the album on a '70s Mesa Boogie MK 1 amp, the same model that engineer Chris Dixon had when they recorded their 1985 debut.

Mascis put it best: "You always hear how Rick Rubin always makes bands he's producing sit down and listen to their first album and say let's get back to that sound. So I just gave myself his advice." I'll be real, that's about as perfect a mission statement as you can get for a Dino Jr. record.

The Lead Single: "Several Got Away"

The first taste of There Near is "Several Got Away", and it's classic Dinosaur Jr. through and through. Blown-out power-pop fuzz, Mascis' unmistakable vocals, and a shredding guitar solo that kicks in right after the bridge and just refuses to let up. It's sunny, it's distorted, it's everything you want from these guys. The track comes with a surreal music video directed by Guy Kozak, who drew inspiration from outsider artist Henry Darger's apocalyptic imagery. It has a scrappy, backyard-movie feel that fits perfectly with the band's visual legacy.

Summer Co-Headline Run with Band of Horses

Before the fall headline dates, Dinosaur Jr. is co-headlining a summer tour with Band of Horses that runs from July 10th through August 1st. This one's special. Band of Horses will be performing their 2006 debut Everything All the Time in full for its 20th anniversary, while Dinosaur Jr. will be playing their 1993 album Where You Been front to back. Two classic albums performed in full on the same bill. That's a seriously stacked night.
