Behemoth Brings Darkness to Phoenix

Behemoth transformed The Van Buren in Phoenix into something closer to a ritual than a standard metal show last week. From the moment the lights dropped and the first chants echoed through the venue, the Polish extreme metal veterans commanded the room with absolute control, delivering a performance that felt massive, theatrical, and relentlessly intense from start to finish.
Frontman Nergal carried himself with the kind of confidence only built through decades of refining a live show to near perfection. Every movement, every pause, and every towering vocal delivery felt deliberate. Rather than relying purely on aggression, Behemoth balanced brutality with atmosphere, creating a set that felt immersive without losing any of its raw force. Massive blasts of smoke, towering backdrops, and carefully timed lighting added to the experience without overshadowing the music itself.
The band sounded razor sharp throughout the night. Inferno’s drumming was punishing and precise, driving songs forward at a breakneck pace while still leaving room for dynamic shifts and slower, crushing moments to breathe. Orion and Seth locked in tightly, adding layers of depth and weight that filled every inch of the venue. Even in the loudest and fastest sections, the mix remained clear enough for the intricate details of the band’s songwriting to cut through.
Tracks from across Behemoth’s catalog landed with equal impact, whether leaning into blackened chaos or slower, more ceremonial passages. The crowd responded accordingly, with constant movement across the floor and huge singalongs erupting during some of the band’s most recognizable moments. Despite the intensity, there was a sense of unity in the room that made the performance feel larger than just another tour stop.
What stood out most was how effortlessly Behemoth balanced spectacle with substance. The visuals were striking, but the performance never depended on them. At its core, the night succeeded because the band remains one of the tightest and most commanding live acts in extreme metal today. By the end of the set, The Van Buren felt completely consumed by the atmosphere Behemoth created — dark, overwhelming, and impossible to ignore.
